Our approach

A long-term approach to building businesses.

We take a long-term view, work closely with the people who run each business, and measure progress over years rather than quarters.

What we bring

  1. A patient, long-term view

We take a genuinely long-term view, without a fixed time horizon or a predefined exit. That changes the questions we ask. Rather than how a business will look at sale, we ask what it needs to be stronger in five and ten years, and we commit to building it.

  2. Active partnership

We are strategically and operationally involved alongside management, not passive holders. We take part in setting direction, we help with the difficult decisions, and we are available between board meetings. Management teams lead their businesses; we are an engaged, supportive shareholder.

  3. Scale and integration

The family has experience in growing, professionalising and integrating businesses. We help build the systems, people and reporting a larger organisation needs, and where a buy-and-build strategy is appropriate we bring a structured approach to acquisition and integration.

  4. Governance

Disciplined decision-making, clear accountability and appropriate oversight. Good governance protects the business, its customers and its people, and gives a management team the confidence to act.

  5. Network access

Commercial, financial and sector relationships built through the family's affiliated entities and operating experience, made available to the businesses we back.

The way we work

Every situation is different, but the way we work with a management team tends to follow a familiar shape.

  1. A conversation

It usually starts with an introduction and an open discussion about the business, its people and what its owners want for it. There is no process to be pushed through.

  2. Understanding the business

We take time to understand how the business really works: its customers, its economics, its regulation and the strength of its team. We are as interested in what is difficult as in what is going well.

  3. Agreeing the plan

Together we set out what we intend to build and how we will work with each other, including the governance, the support we will provide and the autonomy management will keep.

  4. Building together

Then the long part: improving the business, investing where it matters, adding capability and, where it fits, integrating acquisitions. We stay involved for as long as we are useful.

What we look for

We seek businesses in sectors with recurring or predictable revenues, resilient characteristics, meaningful barriers to entry and opportunities to create scale.

We typically establish and support standalone operating businesses with experienced leadership teams, appropriate governance and a long-term investment horizon. Current areas of focus are set out on the home page.

  1. Fragmented markets with consolidation potential

Markets served by many smaller operators, where a well-run platform can bring scale, consistency and professional standards.

  2. Recurring or predictable revenues

Income that is contracted, regulated or repeated by nature, so plans can be made over years rather than quarters.

  3. Meaningful barriers to entry

Regulatory, operational or technology-led advantages that reward businesses which do things properly.

  4. Resilient fundamentals

Essential services and durable demand that hold up through the cycle.

  5. Opportunities for operational improvement and scale

Businesses where investment in people, systems and governance materially improves what customers receive.

  6. Long-term structural growth

Sectors supported by lasting shifts in demand, not short-lived trends.
